Overview

The new “Upopoy” National Ainu Museum and Park in Shiraoi, Hokkaido prefecture is dedicated to the history and culture of the indigenous Ainu people. It was created as a space to not only exhibit and learn about Ainu culture, but also to nurture an interest for “new Ainu cultural contents” by the next generation. We carried out comprehensive production from content production to communications in order to positively overturn biases toward the Ainu and to rapidly increase nationwide name recognition for Upopoy. The campaign successfully captured interest across Japan, and visitor numbers reached an estimated 200,000 in six months from opening, despite launching during the COVID-19 pandemic.
